I use the Bilsom Leightning L3 Earmuff on our Kubota ZD-21 diesel grass mower. The earmuff is the best of several brands that I have used over the past twenty years, and is better than previous Bilsom models that I used. The quality is in the sound protection provided with an NRR of 31. I can easily detect the superior sound protection over the previous NRR 29 Bilsom that this model replaces. High sound protection is supremely important for anyone who is exposed to high noise levels for extended times.I agree that the earmuff is slightly fragile. That may be the price of an acceptable weight and it is a secondary consideration for my use since I can avoid physical maltreatment. For my use, the earmuff has never failed me. Sound protection is not very costly. I have been a USAF F-15C and F-16C aircraft mechanic for over 13 years and have tried scores of different "ear muff" type hearing protection and these are by far the most comfortable as well as effective muffs I have used. Anyone that has ever been up close to a jet engine in afterburner will probably tell you it is the loudest thing you will ever hear (and the last thing you'll ever hear if you don't use hearing protection). These are very effective in protecting my ears in my work environment as well when I take my guns to the range for some target practice.The construction is adequate for the price and the comfort and functionality are second to none. Bilsom sells an ultra-fragile product and refuses to support it when it breaks. I bought the Bilsom Leightening L3 hearing protector in November 2004. In September 2005, I dropped it on a hard floor. The over-the-head piece is connected to the two ear covers with a piece of 1/4" plastic rod on each side of each ear cover. One of the plastic rods broke, making the L3 unusable. I called Bilsom customer support at 800-430-5490, and was informed that there is no warranty coverage on the L3 and that Bilsom would not supply me with a replacement part. I would have to order the part from a distributor. They gave me the number of the Fastenal Company in the 507 area code. I'm going to try to repair the L3 with a drop of super glue and a screw through the center of the plastic rod, rather than incurring expenses that will probably exceed the cost of the hearing protector.
